Elephant Families
Elephants are huge, amazing animals. They live in families made up of mothers and young calves. Families join together into larger herds of 30 to 50 animals. Male elephants leave the family when they become teen-agers. The oldest grandmother, the matriarch, leads the herd. She may be 50 to 70 years old. She remembers where to find the best food and waterholes.
Elephants help each other. When they sense danger, adults circle around the calves, flaring out their ears to look frightening. If the calves can't climb a steep hill, the adults pull them up with their trunks. When...
