The social identity theory proposed by H. Tajfel and J.C. Turner that individuals are encouraged to conduct ingroup-favoring intergroup comparisons to heighten social identity and self-esteem was examined. Forty-nine British undergraduate students were asked to perform a public goods task in which certain group members were required to bestow their endowment. If they were successful, all group members would be awarded a bonus greater than the endowment.
