Edward VI was not, as many historians have held, a pawn of elder statesmen. He was highly educated, ruthless, increasingly involved in governmental affairs, intended to assume full royal power when he became 16, and excluded Mary Tudor from royal succession in favor of the Lady Jane Grey. The myths of his poor health and manipulation by adults are challenged by Edward's actions and documents he wrote.
