Iran enjoys a highly centralized system of education that is modeled on that of Napoleonic France in the 19th Century. The Iranian Ministry of Education is the center of power that specifies a national course of study for all subjects. The syllabus for each subject is set out in great detail, stipulating the content to be covered and the number of hours to be taught. In addition, textbooks must be geared to cover the content of a particular course of study and must meet the standards set by the Ministry's textbook authorization system.
