I write this editorial from the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies (SLAIS) at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Over the last four weeks I have observed with fascination the bedding-in of the Irving K Barber Learning Centre, in which SLAIS is one of the first tenants. The construction of this 18 500 square metre building has been monitored closely by benefactor Ike Barber, Citizen (as he is described in the building's Charter), whose benevolence has substantially extended funds made available for the Learning Centre by the University and the Provincial Government.
