IN THE SECOND DECADE OF THE CENTURY, as the gross national product rose, Americans benefited from mass production and shared in the good life. They bought automobiles (10 million ). The term recreation came into use and trips to the great outdoors were pursued like a religion.
So was entertainment. The dancing sensation of Vernon and Irene Castle invented the fox-trot and helped create a craze for the tango that had a huge impact on America. In 1915 D.W. Griffith introduced the world to his silent film epic, The Birth of a Nation.
