The mineral collection of John Stuart, the third Earl of Bute, ranks as 'one of the finest' during his time. A Scottish nobleman by birth, the Earl developed his interest in mineralogy in the Isle of Bute where he studied natural history and agriculture. William Babington, who classified his mineral specimens, bought the majority of his collection upon his death in 1792. After publishing two books on mineralogy, Babington sold his 'Butean Collection' to John St. Aubyn, a noted Cornish collector.
