An excellent way of cheering oneself up is to read the love letters of famous dead people, especially those written in the midst of doomed, unhappy or otherwise tragic liaisons.
My personal favorites in this genre are the letters Franz Kafka wrote to Felice Bauer. Kafka wrote Bauer thousands of letters over the course of their five-year love affair. The flavor of Kafka's side of their correspondence is illustrated well by the following missives.
