An ethical theory based on mutual love is more appropriate than either divine-command or natural-law approaches to Christian ethics. Divine-command ethics emphasizes obedience to God's sovereign will, whereas natural-law ethics regards the fulfillment of human nature as the goal of ethical action. The natural-law approach thus stresses God's role as the creator of a natural order that is inherently good.
