He's been a major recording and concert star for so long that it's easy to forget Neil Diamond the songwriter.

Actually, Diamond started out as a songwriter and that's probably how he still thinks of himself.

In his introduction notes to the boxed set "In My Lifetime," Diamond wrote "I remember myself as that beginner songwriter trying to see if 'Hear Them Bells,' my first song (written for my girlfriend), was an accident or a trick or possibly something more.
