GETTING THERE: There are no direct flights to French Polynesia from Washington. Air France flies to Papeete, Tahiti, from Los Angeles for about $1,180; the add-on United fare from Dulles hikes the price to about $1,600. If you don't mind a stopover at Easter Island -- which we didn't -- you can also fly Lan Chile to Tahiti, connecting through Santiago. Round-trip airfare from Miami is about $1,600, and about $1,200 from Los Angeles. Air Tahiti offers connections from Papeete to most other major islands.
