Rod DeSautel had been reeling emotionally since the death of his wife, Kathy, in 1989. He wanted to relocate to a place where life was low-key and opportunities for recreation were close at hand.
"I felt like I needed to start all over with the boys," DeSautel said. "Lake of the Woods seemed like a good place for that."
DeSautel took a job as an elementary principal with the Lake of the Woods School District in the summer of 1993. He moved sons Scott and Tom from Fargo, N.D., to Baudette. Scott was entering the sixth grade and Tom the fourth. ...
