On his retirement from the University of Queensland in 1994, where he was the James Forsyth Librarian (1965-1992) and Pro Vice-Chancellor, Academic Services (1992-1994), the University bestowed on Derek Fielding the distinction of University Librarian Emeritus of the University he had served for 30 years. In June 1996 he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his services to the nation in higher education, libraries, the University of Queensland, and to the Australian Advisory Council on Bibliographical Services (AACOBS).
