David Bathurst, 54, who resigned as chairman of the British auctioneering firm Christie's in 1985 after admitting he had lied about the sales of two impressionist paintings, died Sept. 20 after a heart attack. He was stricken while shooting in Scotland. A member of the nobility and a prominent figure in the art world in London and New York, he was president of the Christie's branch in New York from 1978 until 1984.
