THE UNIQUE "Pan's Labyrinth" at first embraces the smoky maze that lies between fantasy and reality, then rejects it in disgust. The film could be labeled a fairy tale for adults , but that is entirely too convenient. It is more about the need for fantasy and how it sometimes cannot overcome the real world.

There is no free ride in this labyrinth. Fantasy is not for sleepwalkers who want to escape reality. It, too, has its price.
