The perception that systemic corticosteroids are safe during pregnancy has persisted until recently, despite solid data showing a possible association between corticosteroid use during the first trimester and some birth defects and toxic effects. Contributing to the misperception is the fact that systemic corticosteroids are rarely used during pregnancy, particularly during the first trimester, making it difficult to detect adverse effects.
