WITH THE DEATH OF CIVIL rights champion Daisy Bates, Arkansas lost one of its giants.
It was on Mrs. Bates' watch as president of the state chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People that one of the most memorable events in American history took place: the integration of Little Rock's Central High School in 1957.
