Students can be taught to use metaphors as a means to enliven the poetry that they write. By making direct comparisons between two distinctly unrelated objects without using the words 'as' or 'like,' students will be able to convey a feeling or thought across by the use of vivid wording that determines the tone of a particular piece. To teach students to use metaphors, show them how they actually use metaphors all the time. Teachers may also encourage their students to always think what the subject they want to write about reminds them of.
