WHEN ASKED ABOUT THE BIOGRAPHY Ira Nadel was writing about him, Tom Stoppard, perhaps the English language's greatest living playwright, remarked, "I want it to be as inaccurate as possible." Elsewhere, Stoppard has said, "I never demand corrections.... If enough things that are untrue are said about you, no one will know what really is true." The statements may seem merely flippant--after all, Stoppard did sit down for several interviews with Nadel and allowed him access to his papers--but they underscore the Tony and Oscar Award-winning playwright's own ambivalence about this literary form...
