Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans, according to a lullaby by John Lennon. Discomfort is what happens to you when you listen to Richard Dreyfuss sing that lullaby in "Mr. Holland's Opus," replacing the name of Lennon's son with that of his character's son. Dreyfuss' singing isn't the problem, but the cloying sequence is. "Mr. Holland's Opus" is one of those earnest but undemanding feel-good films that will appeal to people who complain that there's nothing wholesome playing at the multiplex.
