Dear Dr. Gridlock: Why don't we have traffic-actuated signals in the District of Columbia? We moved here last year from California, where the simple magnetic-field type of actuator is widely used, as they are in many other states. They do a lot to ease the flow of traffic on major arteries, especially at lightly traveled crossroads. An example of what I mean is the intersection of Military Road and 30th Street in Northwest Washington. Thirtieth Street at this point is a quiet residential street that comes in from one side only.
