With the exchange of wedding vows, married couples take on a lifetime of fringe benefits, legal commitments and liabilities. For the price of a lawyer's time, gay couples can draw up a binding contract and secure many of the same benefits and commitments. The contract, however detailed, still would fail to deliver all the legal protections that come with marriage, attorneys said.
