Though only a decade and a half has passed since the fall of the Iron Curtain, it is startling now to recall the Soviet operatic scene as it was before that world-changing event. The few Russian and other east European singers to appear with any regularity were a select handful of stars allowed to travel, but now Slavonic voices are everywhere - sometimes, it seems, everywhere but in their home theatres. The few Russian works familiar to Western opera-goers included Eugene Onegin and Boris Godunov, but now our repertory has been vastly expanded and enriched.
