GETTING AROUND Mexico City by car requires persistence and a bit of guesswork. I never leave my garage without a full tank of petrol because the odds are that I will end up lost in the labyrinth of anonymous one-way alleys. Even if I manage to make it to a destination without a hitch, it's impossible to return using the same route - so I feel doomed to hail passers-by or street vendors and ask for directions.
