Dane County and the city of Madison will embark this week on an aggressive effort to remove shoreline lake weeds and other debris from Madison's two major lakes.
The pilot program targets the perennial blooms of aquatic vegetation that cluster in the shallows, wash up on beaches and, as summer swelters, cause a big stink for lakefront property owners and others using the lakes.
The county bought an $80,000 barge this year and the city kicked in $20,000 for staff to help clear the debris from parks and shallow areas where weed-cutting...
