As one of the smallest members of the squirrel family, chipmunks are common in suburban and rural areas. The eastern chipmunk (Tamias striatus) grows to 10 in. in length and is the largest and most prevalent species of chipmunk. It can be found throughout the eastern United States, except on the southeast coast and in Florida. Other species are sometimes placed in genera other than Tamias (such as Eutamias or Neotamias).
