Premodern Chinese history is so lengthy that even specialists sometimes have difficulty familiarizing themselves with more than a few selected episodes, or dynasties. Much is inevitably neglected in the process, including various transitional dynasties that, arguably, were more pivotal to China's historical development than the big stable ones.
