Navy Rear Adm. Chester W. Nimitz Jr., a highly decorated World War II submarine officer who was the son of the fleet admiral who helped oversee the Allied victory in that war, died Jan. 2 with his wife at a retirement residence in Needham, Mass. Adm. Nimitz, 86, and his wife, Joan Labern Nimitz, 89, took their own lives, family members said. "They were both very frail and fragile," said Nancy Nimitz, one of Adm. Nimitz's sisters.
