The future Holy Roman Emperor Charles V was born in 1500 in Ghent, son of Philip of Burgundy and Joanna of Castile. When he was six his father gave him the Netherlands. To these were added a number of European kingdoms and the Spanish dominions in the Americas when Charles was sixteen, and by the age of nineteen he had added the Hapsburg Empire to his possessions. In 1520 he was crowned Holy Roman emperor, and until he abdicated in 1556 his reign was troubled by religious disputes and wars.
