The future Holy Roman Emperor Charles V (1500-1558) was born in Ghent. At the age of six he inherited the Netherlands, and ten years later he also became ruler of Spain, Naples, Sardinia, and Spanish territories in Africa and North America. By the age of nineteen he had added the Hapsburg lands to his domain, and in 1520 he was crowned emperor in Aachen. His thirty-five-year reign coincided with the transition of the lands under his control from the late Middle Ages to the modern age.
