The Civil War created a crisis in Missouri where both sides had a claim. While pro-Southern Missourians raised a state force, pro-Northern Missourians organized their own forces. One of these was the 2nd Regiment, United States Reserve Infantry, organized at St. Louis in early May 1861 for three months' service.
The regimental surgeon was a St. Louis resident, Charles Spinzig, one of the vast majority of regimental officers with names with central European origins.
