Ben Jonson arguably modeled Carlo Buffono, a character in his play 'Every Man Out of His Humour' on an acquaintance of Walter Raleigh named Charles Chester. An anecdote by John Aubrey showed that Chester did exist. He was a tavern railer who knew and fell out of favor with Raleigh. He was also said to have been imprisoned in the Canary Islands in 1592, from which he escaped. In addition, Chester had a very good relationship with a Dutchman named Cornelius Vandhenden who provided him with a pillow, mattress and blanket in prison.
