A Jewish-South African poet and novelist, Lionel Abrahams faced life-threatening adversity long before he was attacked by the Apartheid government for championing the poetry of black South Africans such as Oswald Mtshali and Mongane Wally Serote. Born in Johannesburg in 1926, Mr. Abrahams has struggled with cerebral palsy, a physical disorder that impairs muscular control and coordination and erodes speech and hearing.
