Carolyn Heilbrun, 77, a feminist scholar of English literature who also was known for feminist mystery novels penned under the name Amanda Cross, was found dead in her New York apartment Oct. 9 after apparently committing suicide. A friend told police that she discovered the body lying face up with a plastic bag over her head, the New York Daily News reported. Dr. Heilbrun, a retired professor at Columbia University, specialized in modern British literature.
