Carl R. Johnson, 78, formerly of Leesburg, Va., died Wednesday at Willow Valley Manor North, 650 Willow Valley Square, after a long illness.

Johnson, known to his friends as "Dean," was a federal government scientist for 40 years. He first worked at the National Bureau of Standards, where he was engaged in metal alloy systems research and performed failure analysis on naval aircraft.

He then worked at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, where he was a materials manager on several satellite programs.
