`You wait 20 years for a comprehensive policy statement on our towns and cities and then two come along at once.' This response, heard at a recent conference, is hardly insightful, but does indicate just how far away we are from a `joined-up' strategy for providing the homes, jobs, and communities we need in urban and rural Britain.
