Protestant missionaries encountered enormous challenges in trying to build a church in Shandong Province, China. Early missionaries encountered stiff resistance from local people who opposed the teachings of the Protestant church. The church had to contend with a wave of anti-Christian sentiments in the province. Moreover, economic and social problems in Shandong hampered the evangelistic work of Protestant and other foreign missionaries, making it extremely difficult to establish stable churches in the province.
