Byline: Taft Wireback 1. The original section of Wendover Avenue (shown on a 1943 map) ran from Church Street to Northwood Street. It was a major east-west street, but only a shadow of the road it would become. 2. 1950s: Another section was built to the east from Summit Avenue to Raleigh Street (one block west of English). Both sections were called Wendover Avenue, but there was a gap between Summit and Church. 3. 1962: State government lets contracts to build Wendover as the same highway that exists there now, including dynamiting for an underpass beneath Huffine Mill Road.
