Bret Harte's stories and Bret Harte himself continue to be subjects of considerable interest. In spite of critical dismissal he is reprinted and re-read. People who read beyond the three or four most frequently anthologized stories are surprised by the wide range of his female characters and the comedies of manners in a Western setting.
