It seems they started flying the flags early this year. Or maybe they never took them down after Sept. 11. Either way, town after town, city after city, is bedecked with Old Glory -- each flag celebrating something glorious, something sad -- and, for me, something very personal. It is the 226th birthday of the United States. It is also the 90th birthday of my mother. Pardon me if I see the two events as linked. I always have.
