`It is as a poem only that I wish this work to be judged after I am dead," Poe states in his preface to this remarkable meditation on the universe, which was originally published in 1848. The universe has certainly not yet been fully explained. In recent months, New Scientist has published articles suggesting that, in one case, we are all living in a big videogame, and in another that everything in the world is a hologram.
