PRESIDENT Derek Bok of Harvard is stepping down after a quiet incumbency of 19 years. Quiet is what the Harvard Corporation wanted from Bok. His predecessor, Nathan Pusey, retired after the tumultuous Vietnam years. A learned Episcopalian gentleman, President Pusey was ill-suited to understanding civil disobedience and revolutionary violence, let alone dealing with it. Derek Bok-who had been serving as dean of the law school-was seen, correctly, as a skilled negotiator who could restore order and gain the acceptance of various factions in the faculty.
