WASHINGTON -- "They have declared a holy war," Bishop Paride Taban of Torit said after a Soviet-built Sudan air force bomber attacked the Chukudum Catholic mission while he celebrated Mass there on Dec. 28. Twelve bombs were dropped on or near the mission property, located about 20 miles northeast of the Ugandan border in Taban's southern Sudanese diocese. The bombing appeared to be part of a "consistent attempt to murder Bishop Taban," charged officials of the New Sudan Council of Churches, which represents Catholic and Protestant churches in rebel-held areas.
