Episcopal bishops, who are elected by parishioners and clergy, have traditionally been viewed as strict, unchallengeable authority figures. But today their job description is more likely to include "conflict management" and pastoral counseling than just playing the role of "answer man and authoritarian," as one veteran priest put it.
