Carlos Juan Finlay was born in Cuba on December 3, 1833. His physician father was a Scotsman who owned a coffee plantation; his mother was a native of France. At age 11, he went to Europe to study but had to return home on two occasions because of illness. After he recovered from typhoid, his second illness, he decided to go to the U.S. to study medicine, and he enrolled in Jefferson Medical College where he graduated in 1855.
