With help from a bad attitude or a stack of studio production, rockers can be fairly convincing in fabricating rage and angst. With an airbrush or orchestral overdubs they can fake sex appeal or sweet warmth. But they can't fake the abandon found on tempestuous new CDs from the Wharton Tiers Ensemble and Boston's Binary System, on Chicago's Atavistic label. Both bands perform tonight at the Middle East. Drummer Wharton Tiers' ensemble is an instrumental, Glenn Branca-style rock guitar orchestra with eight guitar slingers. The group's free spirit radiates through "Twilight of the Computer Age"...
