The U.S. Senate recently approved a bill that addresses the issue of harmful algal blooms that continue to cause problems on and off the coasts of the United States. When humans, fish and marine mammals eat shellfish that have fed on the algae that produce red tide, they are exposed to accumulated toxins, which can cause harmful neurological problems.
The bill, which builds on a 1998 law to provide a federal response to harmful algal blooms throughout the United States, will build on existing provisions to understand, monitor, predict and mitigate algal blooms and hypoxia. It would authorize ...
