Worku Bikila was considered an underdog in yesterday's 27th annual Nortel Cherry Blossom 10 Mile race merely because he wasn't born in Kenya. Kenyans, after all, have won this race for the past eight years. Bikila, 30, an Ethiopian runner who was competing in the Cherry Blossom race for the first time, did not intimidate the Kenyans with whom he ran the majority of the course. But he was not intimidated by them, either. He also pulled away from three Kenyan runners in the final 100 meters of the rain-soaked race in Washington to win in 46 minutes 59 seconds.
