It seems a short time ago that an opera star could be considered appropriate cover material for a national news-magazine. In fact, it was more than thirty years ago that Beverly Sills, who died of cancer on July 2, graced the covers of both Newsweek (1969) and Time (1971). The 1970s were Sills's era of greatest fame.
