Thomas Tryon, 65, who gave up a career as a Hollywood leading man to become the author of such bestsellers as "The Other," "Harvest Home" and "Crowned Heads," died of cancer today at his home in Hollywood Hills. Mr. Tryon's transition from movies to the literary world was as dramatic as any of his film roles. In an interview in October, he attributed the switch to the abuse he suffered from the terrible-tempered Otto Preminger.
